Storing and Caring for Glassware at Home

When it comes to household equipment, some items are more fragile than others. Among the most delicate items found in every home is glass, which can be susceptible to various types of damage. Whether you own glassware intended for dining, entertainment, or merely decoration, here are some tips to keep them looking new for many years.

Glasses, bottles, glass vases.

Everyday glassware, from versatile drinking vessels to ordinary glasses or even glass vases, should be stored in a dry, dust-free place. Glass can be stored rim up or rim down, though there are arguments for both methods.

Storing glassware rim down prevents dust particles from accumulating on their surface and reduces the need to rinse the glass immediately before use. However, this method may not be applicable in every situation or for every glass item. This is because often the rim of the glass is the thinnest and most delicate area, which may not "support" the entire weight of the item. Additionally, storing glassware rim down carries the risk of trapping moisture, leading to the development of mold and bacteria.

On the other hand, storing glass rim up will make them more stable and less prone to potential damage caused by tipping over.

In a cabinet or perhaps in open space?

For glass to be beautiful, it must shine. Therefore, as we mentioned earlier, its contact with airborne dust will make cleaning glass a daily routine. To prevent this, it is best to store it in a closed cabinet or a glass display case. An additional advantage of this solution is that glass cabinets allow for the proper presentation of the best-looking glass collections we have at home. It is also worth mentioning that storing glass in a closed cabinet will make it less susceptible to accidental knocking over and thus damage.

But glass items for the home are not just glasses or goblets. They also include, recently popular pasta containers, glass salt containers, and others. These items are often decorative elements in our kitchen. Remember not to place them near the stove or hood. Both high temperatures and splattering grease or steam will negatively affect their appearance.

Washing glass items.

Most glass items are suitable for dishwasher cleaning. However, for more delicate glasses or goblets, especially those with long stems, opt for hand washing. Hand washing, though tedious, can extend the life of glassware and prevent cleaning agents from accumulating in their structure. Completely avoid dishwashing for valuable or antique glassware. High temperatures, water pressure, and strong detergents can cause irreversible damage and deterioration to their surface. The same applies to opaque glassware that has been coated through painting or screen printing.

Although glass generally tolerates normal temperature changes, particularly humid or dry places can be harmful and accelerate glass degradation. If slipperiness, cloudiness, or discoloration appears, it is a sign that the glass has been stored in poor conditions. This happens when the air's humidity interacts with the moisture inherent in the glass. This reaction causes the leaching of alkaline solution droplets and the formation of beads on its surface.

Proper storage of glassware and maintaining their cleanliness in the correct way will ensure their longevity and the shine they need.
