Top Tips for Kitchen Food Storage – Part 1

Overfilled food storage cabinets or even a poorly organized pantry can cause you to miss expiration dates. Additionally, you might end up duplicating items already in your kitchen while shopping. So, what can you do to prevent this?

Here are some food storage ideas for your kitchen that will help you reduce clutter and organize your storage space:

– Clear out expired products,
– Create an inventory of what you have,
– Use the "first in, first out" principle,
– Store similar products together,
– Transfer your food items into containers,
– Label your jars and food storage containers,
– Regularly reorganize your pantry,

Now, let's discuss the first 3 steps from the list above in detail.

Clear out unnecessary or expired products from your storage space.

The first step to organized and efficient food storage in the kitchen is to take everything out of its dedicated space and check expiration dates. Dispose of expired food, spices (yes, spices can also expire), and other items that are no longer needed. You can also separate food items that are close to expiration but won't be used soon in your household.

Organizing the pantry includes cleaning the space in the cabinet or shelves where you will store food, including checking for moisture, pests, and insects, as all these factors can negatively affect stored food items.

Create an inventory of what you have in your pantry.

After discarding all expired products, it's time to summarize what's available in your kitchen. Categorize your food items. Use glass storage containers for this purpose – glass containers for sugar, glass containers for coffee, glass containers for pasta, etc. You can group together canned goods, spices, sauces, juices, or soft drinks, and so on. Ideally, note down the entire contents of the pantry in a notebook or on paper and stick it inside the storage cabinet. Here are some of the main categories of food items to consider:

– Dry goods, such as flour, tea, sugar, cereals, rice, and so on.
– Canned goods
– Jars and bottles, including jams and sauces
– Packaged food boxes, such as cereals, pasta, crackers, cake mixes, etc.
– Spices, boxes, and jars
– Beverages, including juices, drink cans, and bottles
– Root vegetables, such as onions, potatoes, and garlic, which are not stored in the refrigerator
– Pet food and treats, if you have a furry friend to feed
– Snacks for children and adults, including cookies, chips, and sweets

Categorizing food items in this way will help you determine if you already have duplicates of certain products with different expiration dates. You will also be able to mark items you need and purchase them.

Use the "first in, first out" principle.

Now, before implementing any of our kitchen food storage ideas, you should learn a very important principle – "first in, first out." This means that the most recently purchased items will be used last. The logic behind this principle is that duplicate products, purchased later, will generally have a longer expiration date.

It's important to organize the pantry based on this principle, placing all newly purchased food items at the back or side, so you have easy access to the older ones first. Check the expiration of all products before storing them to use them appropriately.
